Medical Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is available at Gravenhurst Medical, and it is done by either of the two doctors here.  Both are trained in various types of counselling and psychotherapy.  The psychotherapy is covered under OHIP.

The earlier name for Medical Psychotherapy was GP Psychotherapy.  Medical Psychotherapy is therapy done by the Family Doctor to help analyze, diagnose and treat various disorders of mental illness.  These include illnesses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, and other mental illnesses.  There are some statistics that show 1 in 4 patients suffer from some type of anxiety or mental illness.

Childhood events such as abandonment, abuse, or even a car accident in childhood, can lead to changes in your psychological make up years into your adulthood.  Sometimes only through psychotherapy can one find the source of today's anxiety and mental disorders.  Of course, genetics play a role as well.

Psychotherapy has its pro's and con's like any other treatment your Family Doctor may give you.  Con's can include remembering terrible events in the past that have been blocked psychological by ones subconsciousness.  This can lead to behavioural changes in your personal and family life.  The pro's include that fact that discovering these events in your past upbringing, can make it possible for you to deal with it head on, and likely improve some aspect of your life.

There exists different sorts of counselling and psychotherapy. Currently at the clinic we use CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and Supportive therapy.  Other types include mindfulness therapy, and psychoanalysis.

If you have any of the following red flags, it may be time for you to book an appointment for psychotherapy and counselling:

Change in Sleep

Irritable?

Angry?

Change in Appetite

Memory and concentration issues

Loss of Interest in Hobbies

Guilty Feelings

Low mood

Hyper Mood

Change in Energy levels ongoing

Wanting to cry, or crying episodes

Agitation

Hearing voices, or seeing things

Suicidal Thoughts.

The good thing about seeing your Family Doctor for these symptoms above is that your Family Doctor will be able to make sure its not a biological cause, by ordering special blood work.  Its always important to rule out physical causes before assuming its all psychological or emotional.
